It all began 39 years ago, when 3 sailors,.. It all began 39 years ago, when 3 sailors, one from Ashtabula, one from Mentor and one from Port Stanley, Ontario. decided to organize an international sailboat race between Canada and the United States. ...They decided to organize a race between Ashtabula Yacht Club (AYC)and the Port Stanley Sailing Squadron ( PSSS), and by 1965, The Lake Erie International was born.....the race usually takes place over the Fourth of July weekend as Canadians celebrate Canada Day on July 1. .......This year over 35 sailboats raced between the 2 ports. ....it has done wonders for the good will between the USA and Canada. " We have a lot of good friends over there and they have good friends over here, "Neil Hoefert of Ashtabula said. ........... Tami Turner has been racing in The Lake Erie International since 1976. Turner says she likes this race because of the friends she has met in Canada. " The international friendship is ver important," she said. Turner said she likes Port Stanley because,...it is very cultural.....Next year will mark the 40th Anniverasry of The Lake Erie International race co-sponsored by AYC and PSSS.
Getaways to small southern Ontario towns can be so relaxing, ,
The Hamilton Mountain News, July 24, 2002 : excerpt from Julie's Journal :
" During some recent travels, Dave and I came across a quaint little retreat in the heart of the small fishing village of Port stanley. Kettle Creek Inn offered us a quiet retreat from the everyday hustle and bustle of noisy city life.....Port Stanley itself is a harbour town, with shops along its main street and a great sandy beach to frolic on the shores of lake Erie. If you like perch - yellow perch in particular- you will be right at home here.....Everything Kettle Creek offers is handmade on the premises, including fresh bread, delicious desserts and scrumptious jams.....Being in the heart of town, we could walk to all the main attractions .....King George VI Lift Bridge...Port Stanley Terminal rail...I think what was particularly enjoyable about this getaway was the fact it truly was a getaway from the fast-paced city life I m so used to. Everything seemed slowpaced and easy going along our travels ...."
Hosta la vista, Globe and Mail, Sat. Aug.10/02 Marjorie Harris writes :
" Hostas are the bane and the love of my gardening life....At Canadale Nurseries in St.Thomas , Ont.( only 10 min north of Port Stanley) there are more than 200 species being raised up for the trade...The nursery doesn't ship plants but for $5 it will send you its catalogue...519-631-72654...Most of Canadale's new hostas are created by tissue culture...will produce perfectly cloned masterpieces. ...The variety of foliage I saw that day was amazing."
Great Lake Surfing Safaris, as quoted in The Globe and Mail, Saturday May 22, 2002
" Hot spots include small Canadian towns such as Port Stanley on Erie's north shore....One of the big things about surfing the lakes is getting access to the beaches. In the U.S., 80 % of the shoreline of the lakes is in private land. But it's the reverse on the Canadian side- 80 % is public land. So the access in Canada is much easier. .....The most important factor for freshwater surfers is wind. They watch the weather reports, looking for sustained gusts of more than 30 kilometres an hour, which can kick up waves more than three metres high. The best times of year are autumn and spring."

The Buffalo News travel section last year stated: " Looking for a cozy but fun little town that has lots to offer without the starch of a Niagara-on-the-Lake?...just remote enough to make you feel like you're in the heart of rural country but won't make you feel like an outsider." ......"" Port Stanley starts buzzing when the first warm summer breezes blow in from the Midwest, warm the sand and turn Lake Erie into an inviting rendevous. When that happens the beaches come alive: the town starts to pulse, and people are happy."...... "And there's the tranquility of Port Stanley-from watching the sun sink slowly in the westrn sky, to the charming number of bed and breakfasts that offer both a place to rest for the night and the chance to get acquainted with the locals or other guests." ......." Quite simply going to Port Stanley is a day at the beach." |
We found this newspaper clipping shows the marina's basin being dug out in 1965. A lot has changed since then ! Previously there was an old boat house on the site that was known as "Harbour-Rest Marina". The building had been constructed in 1909 and was located further east on the property, at one time or another housing the village fire wagon and team of horses, was the headquarters for the village road repair crew and had been the base for 2 mail routes ! In the 1940's it was moved to the river's edge by Soburn Taylor were it continued to be operated as a boathouse up to the time of its demolition. At first the new marina was known as the Trans-Erie Sail Club until a split dveloped bewteen sailboaters and power boaters. As a result the sailors and the name
moved 500' north to form theire own club while the marina then became known as
Mid-Lake Marina under the ownership of Joe McManus Jr. and friends.
In 1986 the marina was purchased by John & Fiona and renamed Kettle Creek Marina.
2005 we celebrated our 20th Summer Season !
